"From Chicago to Vietnam" a harrowing memoir

Michael Duffy, Vietnam veteran and author, discusses his newly released memoir of war at the Niles-Maine District Library on Wednesday, September 27, at 7pm in the 1st floor Large Meeting Room.

Mr. Duffy recounts a tour of duty that began on the first day of the Tet Offensive when eighty-thousand North Vietnamese and Vietcong soldiers attacked cities and military bases throughout South Vietnam. They would breach the perimeter of Saigon’s Airbase, Tan Son Nhut, forcing Mr. Duffy upon landing to sprint to a waiting helicopter. His harrowing memoir of the brutal tour that followed was 30 years in the making.

"The Vietnam War," a programming guide

for the 10-part PBS Ken Burns series beginning Sunday, September 17, 2017  developed by the ALA Public Programs Office, in collaboration with WETA Washington, DC, is now available for viewing and downloading at this weblink

Paris Bastille Day Celebration, Friday, July 14, 2017,

highlighted the historic and continuing ties between France and the United States. Remarks by Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump on the 100th anniversary of America' s entry into  World War I and the subsequent arrival of American troops in France,  brought to mind the declaration  "Lafayette, we are here "usually and possibly mistakenly  attributed to General John Pershing, 'Black Jack', " rather than his aide, Colonel Charles E. Stanton.
